Olly Barkley says he is determined to put London Welsh’s disastrous season behind them by helping them to promotion from the Championship next season.

The former England fly half, 33, has signed a contract extension with Welsh, whose relegation from the Aviva Premiership was confirmed by last month’s home loss to Bath.

He joined from Scarlets last year and has made 21 appearances, scoring 40 points, “It’s not been an easy year, but I’m committed to seeing my journey with London Welsh through, and helping to repay the great support we’ve received from fans in both Oxford and London,” said Barkley.

“I’m really looking forward to working with our new team and the reinvigorated coaching regime, to put this season behind us and lay a strong foundation for promotion back to the Premiership for the 2016-17 season.”

Barkley, who won 23 times caps, added: “With more re-signings to come and new signings to be announced, these are exciting times.”

Welsh refused to divulge the length of Barkley’s contract.
