Oxford's Jason Plato endured a frustrating first round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championships at Brands Hatch this weekend.

The two-time champion got off to a good start when claiming third place in the opening race yesterday, behind winner Rob Collard and Aron Smith.

Things looked even better for Plato in race two, when he established a commanding lead going into the closing stages.

But, approaching the ultra-fast and daunting Paddock Hill Bend, Plato’s VW careered off with what turned out to be a puncture.

His exit saw a tremendous battle between Gordon Shedden and Andy Priaulx for first place, Shedden sealing a thrilling victory by just 0.04secs.

And things got no better for Plato in the finale.

After being well down the field, he began to make his way through the pack, only for his progress to be halted by a serious power steering problem.

He eventually came home 16th.

Honda’s Matt Neal took victory, followed by Jack Goff and Smith.

The championship moves on to Donington Park in a fortnight, where Plato will be desperate for better fortune.
