Abingdon United gained a valuable point in their battle against relegation from the Uhlsport Hellenic league Premier Division with a 0-0 stalemate at home to Ardley United on Saturday.

It was Ardley’s first goalless draw of the season and only Abingdon’s second clean sheet in 20 games.

In a match which provided little entertainment for a fair-sized Easter crowd, the visitors had the first two chances.

Chris Jackson headed wide from a free-kick and Ricky Johnson lobbed stranded home keeper Lewis Noice, only to miss the target.

Abingdon’s one shot of the first half came when Tom Melledew fired straight at visiting keeper Jack Harding.

The start of the second half produced little change, but Andrew Younie’s shot was taken by Harding before Johnson headed inches over the bar at the other end.

Abingdon had the best chance of the to gain a much-needed three points with ten minutes left.

Keiran Cochrane raced onto a ball by Melledew and tried to slip the ball wide of Harding, but the keeper beat the shot away and Richie Guy put the follow-up effort wide of a post.

Two early goals by Ben Gray gave sixth-placed Thame United a 2-0 lead at home to improving Brimscombe & Thrupp.

However, the visitors stormed back to win 3-2 with a goal either side of half-time from Dave Woodfield and the winning strike from Ollie Pitt.

In a mid-table battle, Oxford City Nomads trailed 2-0 at Wootton Bassett Town to first-half goals from Nathan Gambling and Dale Richards.

However, two strikes after the break from John Rixon saw battling Nomads fight back to draw 2-2.
