FERRUCCIO Lamborghini, famous for the luxury sports cars which bear

his name, has died of heart failure, family friends said yesterday.

He died on Saturday night in hospital in the central Italian town of

Perugia after being taken ill earlier this month.

Lamborghini, 76, was educated as an industrial engineer and first

tasted success making tractors and heating systems immediately after the

Second World War.

But he achieved fame and fortune when he diversified into sports cars

in 1963, competing with the luxury models produced by rival Italian Enzo

Ferrari.

His cars became a byword for 1960s style, with Hollywood stars Grace

Kelly and Frank Sinatra commissioning special models.

But the energy crisis of the next decade hit sales and Lamborghini was

forced to sell a majority stake in his company, which finally passed

entirely to American giant Chrysler in 1987.
