SCOTLAND redeemed themselves with a resounding win yesterday over club

side, Northern Goodwood, in the final match of their pre-season tour to

Cape Town.

The Scots made a substantial 214 for four from 50 overs, and it was

Ian Gavin and George Reifer, with on a magnificent partnership of 166

for the second wicket, who laid the foundation for the victory.

Reifer was denied a deserved century when he was brilliantly run out

for 93 by fellow West Indian Al Johnson. Freuchie's new recruit, Gavin,

had a superb knock, with 80 runs from 114 deliveries.

Gavin made his debut for Scotland last season against the NCA Amateur

XI, and this innings surely will put him in contention for a

middle-order berth. Coupled with his aggressive style as a batsman Gavin

also showed the excellent fielding skills which he has displayed

throughout the tour.

Northern Goodwood's knock began with a setback when a refreshed David

Cowan had Gootkin lbw for one run. Skipper Bruce Russell then brought on

spin twins Govan and Sheridan, who applied the brakes with figures of

two for 26 and one for 28 from 10 overs.

Uddingston pro Reifer added a couple of wickets to his already

substantial haul of runs and Northern Goodwood wound up 62 runs short.
