Athens, Wednesday

TWO British women, believed to be travel representatives, were raped

by a lorry driver on the Greek island of Crete, a spokeswoman for the

British Embassy in Athens said yesterday.

The women had hitched a lift in the lorry in the early hours of

Saturday. They claimed they were attacked when the man drove them to a

deserted beach.

The women claimed they were threatened with an axe by the lorry driver

who picked them up as they hitch-hiked to their lodgings, said a report

on BBC Radio 2.--PA.
