Albert Craig, the former Partick Thistle and Newcastle footballer, who admitted stealing [pounds]42,250 from the postal depot where he worked, was jailed for 12 months at Glasgow Sheriff Court, yesterday.

The 43-year-old, of Skye Crescent, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, took the cash from delivery vans at the St Rollox sorting office in Springburn, Glasgow, to fund his chronic gambling problem.

Sheriff Michael O'Grady, QC, said: "There is the substantial amount of money involved and what was a considerable breach of trust. I would be failing in my duties if I were not to impose a custodial sentence in this case."
