25YEARS AGO FOR the first time in more than 250 years, a Scottish bank is to issue a GBP50 note. It will feature the distinguished Scottish philosopher Adam Smith, the father of modern economics. It is an irony that the new note is the product of inflation but carries the face of the eighteenth-century author of The Wealth of Nations, blueprint for Britain's economic growth.
50 YEARS AGO ASCHEME, financed from Scottish sources, to provide factories to rent is to be launched immediately by the Scottish Council (Development and Industry). At the first stage they will be content to be intermediaries in one or two cases, but if the experiment succeeds they will go on to consider the setting up of a formal organisation to take charge of the project.
100 YEARS AGO INTHE House of Commons Mr Birrell said the case in which the question of instruction in rif le shooting in public elementary schools first came before him was that of an nondenominational school in Hertfordshire. His own personal view, and the advisers of his department had always advised him in the same sense, was that it was not desirable shooting should be included in the time-table of public elementary schools. The sanction given in Hertfordshire was experimental.
