Some fascinating entertainment at Newmarket and, hopefully, racing nearer hand at Ayr, where there is a further 7am inspection this morning, provide a good start as we head towards one of racing's best weekends of the year.

With the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Prix de l'Abbaye and another four Group 1 races at Longchamp to look forward to on Sunday and, a day earlier, the Cambridgeshire, appetites can be whetted in particular by the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes this afternoon, when Wingwalker takes on some smart rivals in his bid for a third successive victory.

The Henry Cecil-trained colt has looked extra special in his two wins, but this field will test his mettle to the full.

He won a good maiden over this course and distance when beating Delegator, a winner since, but really impressed when beating the useful Rileyskeepingfaith over this trip at Sandown. He will need to improve again today with such as Derbaas, Control Zone and Desert Phantom in opposition.

Control Zone looked one to follow when winning a maiden in good style at Newbury, while Desert Phantom has won all three of his races, including a success over the aforementioned Rileyskeepingfaith at Windsor.

Derbaas, third in a Listed race over a mile at Salisbury, may be better suited by this trip today. It promises to an informative affair, but Wingwalker (3.45) can further enhance his reputation.

Of his runner, trainer Henry Cecil said: "Hopefully Wingwalker will run well. He is a bit of a baby at the moment and has to learn to settle."

Richard Hannon, who earned two massive payouts in sales races at the Curragh on Sunday, has a couple of runners in another sales race, the Tattersalls Auction Stakes today, although this time the winner's prize is a mere £147,000.

Appraisal and Ballyalla, therefore, must be seriously considered, and the former in particular looks a major contender, although the trainer has been known to win with the "wrong" one at times.

Among many others of the 30 runners, Cool Art, Queen Of Thebes, Timeteam and Fault look to have decent prospects.

So, too, does Luca Cumani's Magaling (2.35), who is getting better with every race and was a good winner at Yarmouth earlier this month.

There are some proven sprinters in the Listed G4S Rous Stakes, but one of the younger brigade, the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Starlit Sands (4.20), could well be good enough to beat them all.

At Ayr, in the feature race, the Dawn Construction Handicap, Hits Only Vic, Another Moment and Hurlingham (5.15) have chances but the last-named could take advantage of his weight pull in the heavy ground. Selections Newmarket 2.35 Magaling 3.45 Wingwalker 4.20 Starlit Sands
