MAX Crocombe said he was thrilled to be included in the New Zealand squad for the first time ahead of a friendly against South Korea later this month, writes DAVID PRITCHARD.

The Oxford United goalkeeper, who is on loan at Nuneaton Town, was born in Auckland and played for his country at the Under 20 World Cup in 2013.

Crocombe now has an opportunity to show what he can do at a senior level after being named as one of two uncapped goalkeepers for the game in Seoul on March 31.

The 21-year-old knew he was in contention, but admitted when the call came from All Whites boss Anthony Hudson it took a while to sink in.

Latest United news:

He said: “I knew I was in the running with getting in the extended squad, but I have been at that stage before.

“When the manager rang me I didn’t recognise the number because it was an international call.

“I was a bit surprised really, I thought it was someone trying to sell me PPI or something.

“To finally make the cut is brilliant news.”

Crocombe is due to be in action today when Nuneaton travel to Southport in the Vanarama Conference.
