Oxford University triple jumper Sam Trigg fought of an illness to clinch his first BUCS Nationals gold medal in Sheffield.

Trigg, who finished fourth at the British Indoor Championships, qualified with a best jump of 14.90m before returning straight to bed and the rest seemed to work as the 21-year-old leapt to a personal best of 15.38m for gold.

“I actually got ill straight after the British Championships at the EIS last week, so I hadn’t trained all week,” said Trigg.

“I managed to survive qualifying, just stayed in bed and got a bit better, so I’m just thrilled to get gold.”

Trigg was not the only Oxford representative to strike gold.
