REPORTS suggesting Tyrone Barnett had rejected personal terms at Oxford United are wide of the mark, says chief executive Mark Ashton.

A sizeable offer made by the U’s for the 29-year-old was accepted by Peterborough United earlier this month.

The Peterborough Telegraph claimed yesterday the move for the striker, who is the subject of interest from higher-ranked clubs, had broken down.

But last night Ashton rejected the story, with the U’s chief insisting negotiations were ongoing.

He said: “As far as we’re concerned it is, we haven’t been told anything different.

“I spoke to Barry Fry (Peterborough’s director of football) on Monday and they are happy with the offer.

“The discussion I had with the agent was that other clubs were in for him.”

Tom Newey has joined Northampton Town on a deal until the rest of the season, having left United by mutual consent on Monday.
