Oxford City 3

(Winters 15, Yussuf 55, 90)

Oxford City eased into the FA Trophy second round with a comfortable win at Wimborne Town on Saturday, writes MATTHEW BRUCE.

Tom Winters put the visitors in front before the break, and the prolific Adi Yussuf added two more in the second half.

City’s squad included highly-rated midfielder Shepherd Murombedzi, signed from Banbury United in midweek, although the 20-year-old who has had trials at Leyton Orient, Mansfield Town and Leeds United was an unused substitute.

The difference in class between City and their Evo-Stik Southern League Division 1 South & West hosts quickly became apparent as the pressure mounted on the home side.

Winters broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, racing through the static defence to latch onto Javier Rodriguez’s incisive through ball before slotting it beneath goalkeeper Jason Harvell.

City continued to pepper the Wimborne goal with shots and Ander Del Alamo was unlucky to see his close-range header saved.

There was one nervous moment at the City end when George Webb’s cross caused some confusion in the box, but Alejandro-Adrian Santiago was able to clear before Matt Keeble could finish.

Yussuf had the ball in the net just moments after the start of the second half, but saw his effort ruled out for offside.

However, he wasn’t to be denied for long, heading home Lee Henderson’s cross to double the lead ten minutes later.

Felipe Barcelos was inches away from adding a third, exchanging passes with Rodriguez before striking the bar with a fierce shot.

Substitute Lewis Wilson also had the chance to extend the lead when Winters’ effort rebounded out to him, but he fired high and wide with the goal gaping.

The third goal did come in the end, Yussuf tapping in at the far post in stoppage time to seal a straightforward win for City.
