Drennan Oxford members had a clean sweep of the top placings in the practice match for the sixth round of the Oxford Winter League fished by 36 anglers on the Oxford Canal from Wolvercote to Walton Well road.

The match was dominated by end pegs, with the top five places and five out of the six sections won from these positions.

Top of the pile was Drennan’s Matt Herbert, who drew othe peg below Elizabeth Jennings Bridge and had roach, perch and skimmers on the pole and worm for a winning weight of 12lb 9oz 0drms.

Clubmate Tom Hobbs, fishing just above Frenchay Road bridge, was runner-up with 11.5.0, with Carl Eland, from the clapper bridge at St Edwards School, coming third with 10.10.

It will be interesting to see how the top pegs perform in tomorrow's sixth round.

Henry Clarke won Kidlington Angling Society’s open match held on the Langford Wharf section of the Oxford Canal, where ten fished.

Clarke caught skimmers on punch bread and perch on worm – all on the pole for a winning weight of 8.3.0.

Mike Watson came second with 5.5.0, while Ron Hillier was third with 3.8.0 The consistent Predator angler Monty Finnemore won Tackley Sports’ match on Shipton Canal, where eight fished.

He took 2.3.8 of perch, to finish ahead of runner-up of his son, Greg (1.12.8), and Anthony Adler (1.4.0), who was third.

With the River Thames high and running very fast, North Oxford AS switched their Society Cup match to the Oxford Canal at King's Bridge.

Drawn on the ‘bungalow peg’, Steve Wildman had six decent perch on worm for a winning weight of 10.1.0.

Dave Pether fished maggot over groundbait and had a bag of roach for 7.8.0 and second place, while Terry Whittington had perch on worm for 6.6.0 and third place.
