Drennan Oxford consolidated their position at the top of the Angling Trust Winter League with victory in the fifth round on the Kennet & Avon Canal, near Kintbury.

With the canal flowing and a tinge of colour, the canal fished well fish well for the six teams of eight, who recorded some brilliant weights.

Drennan filled three of the top five positions, but the inidividual victory went to Sensas A4 angler Kevin Holmes.

Drawing the favourable peg on the white bridge above Kintbury, Holmes caught skimmers, perch and roach all day for a winning weight of 32.0.0.

Martin Phipps (Drennan Oxford) trailed in a distant second with 18.9.0 from the bottom end peg, while Mark Harrington (Tubertini Apollo Black) was third with 12.2.0.

Dave White packed away his golf clubs to go fishing and showed he had not lost his touch by winning Littlemore AS’s Steve Denny Shield on Moat Lake at Cheyney Manor, where 11 fished.

Fishing caster over groundbait, White had a good net of roach and a bonus tench for a top weight of 18.5.0.

Brian Hutchings, off the next peg, pushed White all the way to come second with 15.5.0. Pete Clarke was third with 10.12.0.

Maurice Winstone braved miserable conditions to win Kidlington Angling Society’s Henry Clarke Cup, fished on the Highwayman stretch of Oxford Canal.

Winstone beat off 11 rivals to win with 5.0.0 of perch and bits caught on the pole with worm on the hook.

Alan Middleton was second with 4.6.8 of mainly roach, while Jamie Barrett was third with 3.2.8.

Points table: 1 J Bean 79, 2 J Barrett 69, 3 H Clarke 68, 4 T Lester 62.

Keiran Thorne caught 34.4.0 of carp on the pole to win Yarnton AC’s contest at College Farm, Aynho.

Ernie Smith was a close second on 32.5.0, with Nick Paxton third on 25.2.0.

Monty Finnemore (Predator) beat off six rivals to win Tackley Estates match with 3.2.0 of roach and perch at the Three Pigeons lock on Oxford Canal.

Anthony Alder was runner-up with 2.8.0 and Mick Merry third on 1.4.0.
