CRAIG Adey applauded his Oxford City youth side’s superb all-round effort after they made the third round with a dramatic 2-1 FA Youth Cup win against Luton Town at Marsh Lane on Tuesday.

Victory was secured with a brace from Kaylem Patterson and Alex Grantham’s penalty save from Isaac Galliford.

Luton’s Daril Ngwala clawed one back late on, but City held on to make the third round for the first time in more than 50 years.

Adey was keen to heap praise on all their cup heroes, rather than just the match-winning duo.

“It was a full squad effort,” the City manager said.

“I know the centre forward got two goals – he was superb and took his chances well – but it needed a big effort from all the boys to get through.

“I’m very proud of him (Patterson), he deserves it.

“Last year he was out for a long time and had to have a knee operation.

“He plays for our development side and the Oxford College team and a lot of the students came to watch the game which was great.

“Both Kaylem and the captain, Amer Awadh, have been invited to train with the first team.

“We’ve got so many fantastic boys making names for themselves here.”

It continued a good month for Patterson, 17, from Headington, who has made it to the last 64 of the English Schools’ FA under 18 trials.

The South East v South West play-off takes place at Lilleshall on November 28-30 .

Meanwhile, Adey admitted his heart was in his mouth when Luton were awarded a spot-kick.

He said: “When they got the penalty I said to my assistant ‘if Alex saves this I have a feeling we will win’ and that’s how it turned out.

“He was outstanding on the night.

“The penalty was a double save – he pushed the ball onto the post and then saved the follow-up.”

Adey said progressing any further in the competition was a bonus.

“The last time City got this far was in 1962 when they reached the fourth round, so just to get through to the third round is a hell of an achievement,” said Adey.

City, who have played six games in the competition, will now host Royston Town, who beat Welling United 2-1 last night, on a date to be arranged.

  • OXFORD City still do not know who they will host in the FA Trophy third qualifying round later this month.
Lewes and Heybridge Swifts need a replay following a 1-1 draw last night, after Saturday’s game was postponed.
Didcot Town will visit Merthyr Town, who won their replay 3-2 against Slough Town.
