THERE were upsets galore as the Greene King ODDA men’s summer pairs play-off produced an unlikely line-up for the final.

For the first time there was no representation from the top section in the semi-finals.

At the end of the play-offs at Marston British Legion, Michael Slatter and Cliff Whistler, from Littlemore RFC, became the first team from the bottom section to reach the last two in the pairs.

They will face father and son pairing Mark and Rhys Kerry (Corner House D), who booked their place in the final.

The shocks began in the first round, where Chris and Sean Pollard (Vikings Social Club) stunned the large crowd when they took out highly-fancied Goodlake Arms pairing of Preben Krabben and Kevin Wilkins.

Elsewhere, Section 8’s Slatter and Whistler claimed the scalp of Section 1 side Chequers Inn.

The Kerrys began by knocking out Corner House’s B-string pair.

They followed it up by knocking out formidable Cowley Workers duo Lyndon Richards and Wayland Honour to reach the quarter-finals.

Winter League champions Simon Key and Mark Holtom (Marlborough Club) were the next big names to be eliminated, as the Pollards continued their good form.

Slatter and Whistler booked their place in the last eight by defeating Cricketers Arms E, from Section 2 and the run was maintained with a win over Cricketers Arms B.

It set up a semi-final where they finally halted the Pollards, who had despatched Premier League champions Sean Holly and Neil Russell from Kidlington Green Social Club.

Mark and Rhys Kerry saw off Aaran Stevens and Ian Moss (Cowley Workers) to reach the semi-final.

There they came out on top in a hard-fought clash with George Bar D pairing of Wayne Stevens and John Cole, who had knocked out Black Bull and Cricketers Arms G.

  • The ODDA Winter League will begin on November 11-12.

Fixture lists can be collected from the Chequers Inn, Headington Quarry next Monday from 7-9pm.
