BRITSH GAS NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

DAVID Murphy pro-ved unbeatable when competing for Oxfordshire and North Buckinghamshire at Sheffield.

Murphy, one of nine City of Oxford members competing in the championships, collected maximum points for the team with a victory in the boys’ 14-15-year-old 100m breaststroke.

His winning time of 1min 2.98secs was just 0.16secs outside his brother Alex Murphy’s junior British record.

Murphy and clubmate Ewan Springett were members of Oxon & North Bucks’ boys’ 14-15-year-old 4 x 50m medley relay team, which won in a junior county record time of 1.49.19.

Kieren Bird, of Bicester Blue Fins, finished third in the boys’ 14-15 100m butterfly.

Bird broke the club record by a second and a half.

His clubmates Oliver Inness and William Whitley were part of the boys’ age 12-13 4x50m medley relay team.

Inness set a personal best in the backstroke leg, while Whitley swam the breaststroke.

The county squad, led by Blue Fins’ head coach Struan McNeil for the first time, finished 12th in the top division event of 20.

McNeil will take on the role for the next two years.

He said: “It was an honour for me to be asked to lead the county squad.

“It’s very much a team effort here at Bicester, so for our small club to be recognised ahead of the big city clubs is a great endorsement of what we’re achieving.”

The other City of Oxford swimmers competing were Tash Fenton, Daniel Jenkins, Kate Mills, Shannon Motha, Emily Nisbet, Daniella Springett and Emily Wood.
