A dream came true for in-form roach expert Alan Storey from Sutton, Oxfordshire, when he slipped his net under a magnificent roach weighing 4lb 2oz, writes ANDY WEBBER.
The huge redfin was caught at a southern stillwater which Alan has been fishing on and off for the last nine years and came during a four-day session.
Setting up in a howling gale, he was forced to move swims as the wind just became too fierce, and he cast out his feeder bolt rig with two flavoured maggots on a size 16 Kamasan hook.
The fish took the bait at about 7pm.
Because Alan was fishing in about 14 feet of water he taped up some of the holes in his feeder so the maggots didn't come out as it dropped through the water.
He was also using 3lb Wychwood flurocarbon hooklength and 4lb Maxima mainline.
He baited up with hemp, pellets and corn and then placed a Heathrow Bait's Indian Spice pop-up on top. He was using 17lb mainline and a size 8 hook.
The fish took a Scopex boilie hair-rigged to a size 8 ESP hook, amongst a scattering of loose boilies.
Incidentally, Chad is under new ownership and most of the silver fish from the one lake have been removed.
More carp have been stocked, while the perch have been left in the water.
It has been stocked with fish averaging 2-5lb, with the odd 7lb fish being taken. The season runs from March 1 to the end of September and anyone interested can contact Ron Wells on 01865 341311 or 07940 319586.
