WANTAGE Town were denied their first Southern League point when a hotly-contested late goal from AFC Totton sent them falling to a 2-1 home defeat in Division 1 South & West last night.

Things had looked good for Wantage when Swindon Town loanee Matt Jones had put Gary Ackling’s side into a 11th-minute lead.

However, the visitors levelled when Craig Feeney headed home from close range on 36 minutes.

An entertaining second half saw chances at both ends, with Wantage keeping Lee Farrow making a fantastic double save on the hour mark.

But with five minutes to go, a free-kick from Liam Gilbert, hit the bar, bounced down and although the ball didn’t appear to have crossed the line, the linesman awarded the goal to the disgust of the home side.

Didcot Town were unable to build on their opening-day victory over Swindon Supermarine as they went down 3-1 at Stratford Town.

Jamie Sheldon fired the hosts into a 12th-minute lead, only for John Mills to equalise.

Richard Gregory’s free kick eight minutes into the second half restored Stratford’s advantage, and Chris Sterling put the result beyond doubt.

Banbury United suffered a second successive defeat after losing 3-0 at Hitchin Town in their Premier Division clash.

Goals from Charlie Smith (25), Simon Martin (38) and Robbie Burns (70) condemned Edwin Stein’s side to defeat.

Naosi Mzungwani hit a post for Banbury in the first half.
