Lawrence Clarke had a final to forget as he finished last in the 110m hurdles.

The 24-year-old, from Christmas Common, near Watlington, was never in the race and hit two hurdles hard as he tried to push towards the end.

Clarke clocked 13.84secs as his teammate Will Sharman took silver in 13.36.

Jamaican Andrew Riley’s winning time was 13.32, which is just outside Clarke’s personal best.

Clarke, who finished fourth at London 2012, was too upset to speak afterwards.

But he did tweet: “Ran like a Wally. Apologies all. Thank you for the outstanding support. I will right my wrongs in Zurich (European Championships).”

He reached the final after clocking 13.63 for second place in his heat yesterday morning.

After his semi-final, he said: “It was emotional. I was almost in tears on the start line. It’s six years I have been waiting for this moment.”
