TRACK cyclist John Paul, Oxfordshire sportsman of the year in 2011, was knocked out in the men’s sprint qualifying.

The Scotsman, whose parents live in Wantage, finished 14th with only the top 12 progressing.

  • FORMER Oxford University student James Jurkiewicz (Guernsey) won his 100m backstroke heat.

But his time of 1min 0.29secs was not fast enough to make the semi-finals.

Another ex-Oxford student, Tucker Murphy, competed in the men’s triathlon for Bermuda, where he was awarded joint 27th place among the athletes who were lapped.
