A spectacular innings from Harry Smith yesterday blasted Great & Little Tew to within one victory of a Lord’s final.
Smith hammered 79 off just 43 balls as Tew triumphed by 50 runs in the Davidstow Village Cup quarter-final clash at Cornish champions Roche.
Standing between Tew and a dream day at cricket’s HQ on Sunday, September 7 are either Reed (Hertfordshire) or Dinton (Bucks), whose quarter-final was halted by a thunderstorm.
The teams will meet again at Dinton this Sunday for the right to face Tew in the semi-finals on August 3.
Choosing to bat first, the Oxfordshire champions made a steady start, Ashley Hubbert leading the way with a half-century.
Following the dismissals of Joe White and Markus Jeacock, Hubbert shared a third-wicket stand of of 105 with Smith before falling for 58 made off 103 balls.
The acceleration came from Smith who hit five sixes and seven fours in a superb innings, which help Tew amass 99 from their last ten overs.
Tew’s total of 232-8 from 40 overs, always looked a tough one. But the hosts made a bright start, with 50 coming off the first ten overs.
Skipper Andy Harris and Lloyd Brock slowed the momentum, so that when Ian Bryan came on, Roche needed more than seven runs per over.
The spinner took 4-31 in nine overs to confirm Tew’s place in the last four.
