Oxford Mail: Michael Appleton closing in on first Oxford United signings Michael Appleton closing in on first Oxford United signings

MICHAEL Appleton is hoping his first Oxford United signing could be completed before Saturday's opening pre-season game at Farnborough.

The head coach has been busy searching for players to improve the squad since taking over on Monday.

So far this summer, only Danny Hylton has arrived at the club, but productive discussions were held with two targets yesterday.

While Appleton, 38, could not guarantee anything would be sealed before Saturday, there is every chance multiple signings could arrive within the next few days.

He said: "I don't think we're a million miles away.

"Regardless of my age I'm probably too experienced to get carried away, but yesterday especially I had two very positive talks with players and agents."

He added: "There's an opportunity that certainly one might be in before the weekend, but the likelihood is by the start of next week instead of it just being one it might be two or three."

No thanks. None of them played well at this world cup. All over-rated and Ronaldo will spend all of his time on the ground.

Its always tantalising to read about a pending signing or two; but I often wander why clubs comment on the timing of potential new signings as I would have thought it would place them in a more vulnerable position re the negotiations with the player/agents.

I do understand that the club wants to attract more season ticket holders and its an effective way of capturing a positive media story that could pay dividends.

Lets hope its a bigger name than Hylton; I just can't understand why Waddock was allowed to sign that player for 2 reasons: one IL must have been pretty sure that GW was for the high jump and secondly, Hylton on paper was very average at best.

I was thinking the same. All I can think of is that it was to keep people quiet. But then how was GW told to not sign new players.

I would imagine that these signings are pretty much in the bag or you wouldn't risk announcing this if you were not sure, especially given MA has only been in the job a few days.

I also think we need to back Hylton, lets wait until he plays before we decide if he is average or not.

On paper Hylton is average and that's a fact. I can't help thinking that without the support of the manager that signed him, Hylton might struggle to be in the starting XI. As an OUFC supporter i hope he turns out to be a revelation, scores 30 goals and vindicates GW's judgement of course.

Let's pray that Ma's first signing gets people to sit up and take notice, the second- gets 'wavering' fans interest, and the third and fourth gets them rushing to the bookies!! But, I wouldn't bet on it..

"World Cup semi finalist"...and? Doesn't automatically make them a good player. In addition, I wouldn't want a self-obsessed, cocky and arrogant player like Ronaldo playing for us, regardless.
This is my last response, I swore I'd never get into rhetorical and nonsensical discussions like this.

Rohan Ricketts or Lee Cook - Just to throw some names in the mix. MA mentioned that he was looking for some older heads in the squad and they are both free agents.
