Oxford Futsal Club are celebrating after wining the Under 19 National Futsal Championship in Birmingham on Sunday.

The side made up of local lads and City of Oxford College students were unbeaten from the regional qualifiers right through the competition.

In the final, they saw off Accrington & Rossendale College 4-1 with goals from Liam Palfreeman, Deon Gallacher, Ryan Barney and Jack Self. Oxford were also indebted to keeper Christian Lawrence, who saved two penalties. The team are coached by Oxford City’s Craig Adey.

And there was a double for Oxfordshire with Marston Saints taking the Under 10 crown in Birmingham.

In the six games at the finals, they scored 11 goals and conceded just two.

More than 300 teams entered the Under 10 age group and to get to the finals, teams had to qualify from their county tournament, and then the regional stage. Marston were representing the South East of England in the finals, having won a qualifier in Guildford in May.

They lost the first game 1-0 to a Brazilian Futsal Academy team called Esciolla, from London, but manager Richard Moore said: “These boys picked themselves up, and won the next five games on the bounce.”

He added: “We owe a huge debt to Enrique Guillen, Oxford City’s head coach, who has done a lot of work with the boys. “He has taken a grassroots side to FA national champions.”
