Great & Little Tew stormed into the last 16 of the Davidstow Village Cup with a comprehensive 121-run victory away to Dorset champions Parley yesterday.

But the gloss was taken of their success by a serious injury to Ashley Hubbert.

The opening batsman gashed his knee badly while diving in to make his ground on a third run.

The game was held up for 15 minutes as he was helped off the field.

Hubbert, who had to retire hurt on 44, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The injury is expected to keep him out of the game for several weeks.

Hubbert had featured in an opening stand of 92 with Joe White after Great Tew had chosen to bat first on a dry pitch.

White was the more aggressive partner, scoring 53 off 75 balls.

Harry Smith chimed in with 29 off 26 deliveries as the visitors seemed on target to pass 200.

But Hubbert’s injury came in the middle of a collapse in which six wickets fell for 21 runs.

A late flury from Robbie Shurmer took Tew to 189-8 from their 40 overs.

Shurmer then blitzed the early Parley batting with three wickets in two overs as they slumped to 3-3.

They never recovered from these blows and their hopes were ended when their Sri Lankan hope Roshan Embalalgama fell to Ian Bryan for 28.

Bryan picked up 3-8 in 7.3 deadly overs as the home side’s tail crashed to be all out for 68 in the 28th over.

Shurmer finished with 3-24, while skipper Andy Harris and White each picked up two wickets.

In the last 16, Tew will now be away to Somerset champions Ashbrittle, from near Wellington.

Yesterday Ashbrittle won by five wickets against Ynystawe, the Glamorgan and Gwent winners.
