SWIMMING: Fenton breaks City record in capturing double gold

8:00am Saturday 21st June 2014

City of Oxford’s girls were in medal-winning form in the breaststroke events over the second weekend of the South East Regional Championships in Crawley.

Natasha Fenton, 11, took gold in both the 200m (2mins 53.57secs) and 100m (1.21.33) breaststroke, breaking the club record in the latter and securing national qualifying times with both swims.

Maia Little, 13, won gold in the 100m breaststroke in 1.17.11 and silver in the 200m breaststroke in 2.47.93.

Younger sister Delphine, 11, won silver in the 100m freestyle in a club record of 1.06.53.

Bicester Blue Fins’ Freddie Ashley-Sparks also secured a double success.

The 11-year-old won the 100m and 200m butterfly titles in club record times.

He also broke records in the 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle.

Maddy Powell, ten, became regional champion in the 400m individual medley in a club age group record time.

She also picked up silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 200m individual medley.

On the way to securing a top-ten finish, Lottie Wynne-Jones sliced a remarkable 12 seconds off the club 11-year-old 200m freestyle record and 11 seconds off the 200m individual medley mark.

Daniel McNamara was Abingdon Vale’s most successful competitor.

The 11-year-old secured silver medals in the 100m freestyle, with a time of 1min 05.94secs, and the 100m butterfly (1.15.89).

He also came fourth in the 200m backstroke (2.42.03) and seventh in the 400m freestyle (5.08.17).

The Witney & District SC member won the 17-24 age group title in all three backstroke events (50m, 100m and 200m), setting new master long-course club, county and regional records and Great Britain records along the way.

Other medals for the Witney team came from Graham Cable, who picked up silver in the 30-34 year breaststroke and bronze in the 200m breaststroke, while Matt Everett also claimed bronze in the 30-34 year 800m freestyle.

To cap a great day at the event in Swansea, Witney’s quartet of Speare, Cable, Everett and Blan Walker became national champions in the 72yrs plus 4x50m and 4x100m relay.
