ROWING: Triggs Hodge leads bid for gold
8:00am Friday 20th June 2014 in Sport
OXFORD’S Andy Triggs Hodge and his crewmates can add to their gold-medal haul at this weekend’s second World Cup meeting in Aiguebelette, France.
Triggs Hodge strokes Great Britain’s four alongside Henley’s Alex Gregory, Mohamed Sbihi and George Nash, with whom he won gold at the recent European Championships in Serbia.
Elsewhere, Polly Swann, of Henley’s Leander Club, moves from the women’s pair into the eight, which also includes former Headington School pupil Katie Greves.
Oxford’s Olivia Carnegie Brown will row alongside Leander’s Monica Relph in a second women’s pair.
Another Leander member, Alan Sinclair, has been drafted into the men’s eight featuring double Olympic champion and Oxford Blue Pete Reed.
Performade director Sir David Tanner said: “Once again, we are fielding a strong squad, but one where we test out young rowers and new combinations.
“This is a critical year in the Olympic cycle and the chief coaches, Paul Thompson and Jurgen Grobler, are aiming to win medals, but also to tease out our longer-term strengths.”
Wallingford’s 2013 world under 23 champion Eleanor Piggott rows with Charlotte Taylor in the second lightweight women’s double.
Brothers and Oxford Brookes alumni Peter and Richard Chambers team up with Leander’s Chris Bartley and Mark Aldred, hoping to build on their European silver in the lightweight men’s four.
The medal winning-lightweight men’s pair of Sam Scrimgeour and Jonno Clegg plus the light men’s double of Clegg’s Leander clubmates Jamie Kirkwood and Will Fletcher are unchanged.
Britain’s para-rowing line-up includes Leander’s Pamela Relph plus Henley’s Oliver Hester and Oliver James (cox) in the legs-trunks-arms mixed coxed four.
