TOM Newey is hoping to make up for the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs with Oxford United by signing up for another season.

After taking time to consider his options, the 31-year-old, who was out of contract this summer, has agreed a new 12-month deal.

Newey joined the U’s last summer after being released by Scunthorpe United, making 47 appearances.

The left back was part of the side which topped Sky Bet League Two, before slumping to finish eighth.

He said: “The first two-thirds of last season showed what we can do, and I think there is a real feeling about the club that we want to put things right after the way it ended.

“Personally, I want to play in a successful side and signing for Oxford gives me that opportunity next season.”

Gary Waddock was pleased to tie up the final loose end from last season’s squad and the head coach has spoken to several targets. Sources in the Midlands suggest Kaid Mohamed is on the club’s radar.

The Port Vale forward has a year to run on his contract, but the League One club are believed to be prepared to let him move on without a fee.

Our summer just got worse :(
Coupled with the news that GW is on the hunt for freebies, next season looks concerning. I can see a relegation fight ahead.
