HOCKEY: Old head Fox upbeat for World Cup tilt

DAN Fox believes a blend of youth and experience in England’s World Cup squad will be the key to success in The Hague.

At 31, the Oxford University graduate is the oldest member of the group which begins their campaign against Spain on Saturday.

He is one of six survivors from the last World Cup, while 11 will be making their debuts as England target their first medal in the event since 1986.

He said: “I’m the oldest bloke in the team now which is very strange and a lot different from when I first started.

“I think what is really valuable is that a lot of us have played in big games.

“Without the new faces though and the people who are desperate to get there and their enthusiasm, then you don’t necessarily have the right motivation and mix of characters.”

After Spain, England also face Pool A games against India, Malaysia, champions Australia and Belgium.
