MOTORCYCLING: It's girl power as Polden roars to maiden victory

Georgina Polden made history by becoming the first female winner in the Aprilia Superteen Challenge.

The 17-year-old motorcycle racer, from Kidlington, won the second race at Snetterton to seal a memorable weekend which saw her finish second in the other three rounds.

She was thrilled to become a trailblazer in a series which dates back to the 1990s and has helped launch the careers of a long list of successful riders, including Casey Stoner, Cal Crutchlow and Leon Camier.

And having reached the top step of the podium, Polden is eyeing the overall title.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted to become the first female to win a race in the official Superteens.

“But make no mistake, I’ll be looking for many more, which I’ll need to take the championship.”

While the weekend ended on a high, it began on a low note.

After attending her grandfather’s funeral on Friday, Polden suffered a big crash in Sunday’s qualifying session.

But despite the collision, she had done enough to claim pole position.

A second place in race one gave her the confidence to battle at the front.

The next race saw a ferocious scrap among the top three, but after hitting the front with two laps left, Polden did not look back.

Another two runners-up finishes lifted her up to third in the overall standings ahead of the next meeting, at Cadwell Park on May 25-26.

Standings (top five): 1 J Thompson 246pts, 2 R Skinner 234, 3 G Polden 181, 4 J Boyle 147, 5 S Faber 110.
