An excellent all-round display saw Aston Rowant cruise to a six-wicket win at home to Beaconsfield in the Royal London Club Championship first round.

Damian Shirazi, better known as a prolific run-scorer, captured 5-26 with his off-spin as Beaconsfield struggled to 151 all out on a slow pitch.

Former Oxford captain Jason Harrison, now playing for Beaconsfield, suffered a rare ‘obstructed the field’ dismissal.

Harrison went for a quick single, and the umpire decided that he had veered off line to prevent a throw at the stumps. He was out for nine.

Top scorer for Beaconsfield was skipper Chris Thomas with 57.

Rowant were never in much trouble after an opening stand of 63 between Shirazi (31) and Tim Morgan, who made the top score of 54.

Chris Watling (33no) guided Rowant home to victory with more than three overs to spare to earn them a home tie with High Wycombe on Sunday.

Oxford went through to the next round with a 26-run victory at home to Richmond.

The hosts made only 159, John Barrett top-scoring with 34, but Richmond were restricted to 133 as left-arm spinner Francois Vainker took 3-20.

Oxford are now at home to North Maidenhead.

Banbury made it through with a nine-wicket victory at home to Leighton Buzzard, and will now entertain Buckingham.
