Lloyd Sabin was in smashing form as Oxfordshire crushed Staffordshire by 153 runs at Stone yesterday to make it two wins out of two in Group 4.

The Banbury batsman hammered a brilliant 118 off 125 balls as Oxfordshire amassed 317-9 from their 50 overs – the largest scoreconceded by Staffs in a one-day game. The hosts mustered just 164 in reply.

One of Sabin’s five sixes smashed Oxfordshire’s dressing room window, with his teammates unable to prevent it going through. He also struck nine fours.

Yet Oxfordshire had got off to a shaky start after being put in to bat, losing both openers, Shabaz Alam and Richard Kaufman, with the score on 11.

Sabin and Jonny Cater turned the game around with a third-wicket stand of 158 in 31 overs, making the most of a good pitch.

Cater was out for 65, made from 90 balls with six fours, while the Oxon innings went into overdrive following a run-a-ball 21 from Chris Watling.

Chad Keegan thrashed 39 from just 18 balls, with four sixes, while skipper Luke Ryan went even faster scoring 40 from just 12 deliveries with five sixes and two fours.

The last ten overs produced an amazing 122 runs as Oxon set an almost insurmountable target.

Keegan then claimed a wicket in the first over of the Staffordshire innings, thanks to the first of two sharp catches by Kaufman at second slip.

Former Leicestershire batsman Kadeer Ali offered resistance with 42 from 45 balls.

But the wickets kept tumbling and the hosts were all out in the 40th over.

Seamer Karl Penhale followed his five wickets in the win against Berkshire the previous week with 3-29, while the whole Oxon attack bowled with discipline to complete a comprehensive victory.

Oxon, who brought in Oxford’s Jasper Davies after Richard West failed a fitness test, continue their campaign against Bucks at Challow on Sunday.
