FOOTBALL: Super Didcot extend their terrific run
7:00am Monday 14th April 2014 in Sport
Didcot Town increased their unbeaten run in Calor League Division 1 South & West to seven matches with a hard-fought 2-0 victory at the Draycott Engineering Loop Meadow Stadium on Saturday.
It certainly wasn’t a game for the purists as both sides struggled to get a foothold.
Consequently, the first half in particular was almost completely devoid of any action in both goalmouths.
The only time either keeper was tested was when Didcot’s Sam Elkins brought a decent diving save from Godalming’s Zak Oualah.
The home side started to turn up the pressure after half-time and went into the lead 11 minutes after the break.
A superb through-ball from player-manager Jamie Heapy fell to Josh Dutton-Black.
He showed great composure to bring the ball down and then lob Oualah from the edge of the box.
The decisive second goal arrived seven minutes later as Didcot turned the screw.
A John Mills cross found the head of skipper Luke Carnell who made no mistake from close range.
Jack Longford almost added a third in the closing stages, but once again found Oualah in fine form as he clawed the ball away to safety.
Didcot are now top of the form in the Division and look almost certain to finish up in mid-table by the end of the season.
Given that they found themselves deep in relegation trouble only a few months ago it has been a remarkable turnaround of fortunes in 2014.
