BERINSFIELD youngster Gerard Ward eased into the semi-finals of the National Schoolboys Championships without getting into the ring.

The 13-year-old Home Counties champion was due to fight Strood ABC’s Charlie Jenkins in the pre-quarter-final of the class 2 59kg competition at Bracknell.

But Jenkins was unable to make the weight and Ward went through on a walkover.

There was no quarter-final opponent to fight in that part of the draw, so Ward, a 51kg finalist in 2013, has secured a place in the last four.

Windrush Valley Boxing Club’s Jimmy Doran, 12, did fight as he won through to the quarter-finals.

Doran beat Guildford’s Joseph Inman in the pre-quarter-finals of the 371/2-40kg class A category.

He will now face Eastern Counties champion Luke Brook (Rayleigh) at Camberley, Surrey today in a 40kg bout for a semi-final place.

  •  CHLOE Gorringe gained a convincing victory at the Paddy Johns ABC show, near Bristol.

The Berinsfield member proved too good for Georgia Simeone, whom she also defeated in the National Schoolgirl Championships.

Gorringe dominated from the off, keeping her opponent under pressure and landing hooks to head and body.

She was just too strong and won on a unanimous decision.
