ANGLING: North Oxford members cash in on the canal

The Oxford Canal came into its own again last Sunday, allowing local clubs to stage matches while many rivers remained unfishable.

North Oxford AS held a club match at Frenchay Road and although there were no outstanding weights, 11 of the 13 anglers weighed in two pounds or more.

Dave Scott-Picton led the field with 4lb 12oz of skimmers and roach on bread, followed by Jamie Barrett, who alternated between worm and bread to catch perch and roach for a second-placed 3.12.0. Henry Clarke was a close third with 3.10.8.

Masons AC fished their penultimate league match on the Highwaymen stretch of canal at Kidlington.

Bob Yeomans took advantage of the first end peg by the cottage, alternating between bread, pinkie and maggots to catch 5.9.0 of mainly skimmers and roach for top spot.

Jason Smith fished worm and maggots to catch perch, skimmers and roach for a second-placed 4.3.0, followed by Paul Armstrong with 2.0.0.

Tackley Estates AC were at the Rock of Gibraltar for their latest match, fished by ten anglers.

Anthony Alder found some bream and fished pole and worm for a winning 7.11.0.

Stephen Malone was second with 4.3.8 of bream and roach to pole on worm and bread punch, pipping John Spencer’s 4.3.0 of bream and bits.

The Roach Cup went to Stephen Malone.

After weeks of flooding, the Cherwell looks as though it will be perfect for Marston AC FTB’s last two matches of the season, starting with the rearranged Fosters Andrews Cup tomorrow.

The last match of the year, the Pipeline Centre Cup, will be on the following Sunday.

Meanwhile, Marston will also be holding their AGM on Tuesday, March 11 at the Bricklayers Arms at 8pm. All members welcome.
