FOOTBALL: Brooks slams a hat-trick

7:00am Monday 24th February 2014

Ryan Brooks scored a second successive hat-trick as Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division leaders Ardley United thumped Newbury 5-1 at home on Saturday.

It followed his treble in the 3-0 win against Wantage on January 18, the last time Kevin Brock’s side played.

The result saw Ardley move seven points clear of second-placed Wantage, though they have played three more games than their Oxfordshire rivals.

Ardley went ahead on 16 minutes when Ollie Stanbridge’s pass found Brooks who made no mistake. However, the home side were rocked when Ben Matthews levelled.

Ardley were back in front on 27 minutes when Troy Bryan broke into the box before slotting home.

The hosts kept up the pressure after the break and went further in front when Ben Thomas headed in a corner.

Brooks netted his second goal on 71 minutes with a shot in off the near post.

He completed his treble five minutes from time to make it 45 goals for the season in all competitions.

Tom Melledew scored a second-half winner for Wantage in a 2-1 success at home to Shrivenham.

Richie Claydon blasted in Wantage’s opener on three minutes following a terrific back-heel from Matt Pedder.

But six minutes later, it was all-square when Steve Robertson finished well.

Wantage turned up the heat after the break and on 72 minutes Melledew sealed the points with a terrific shot into the top corner after a driving run.

Kidlington twice fought back to beat Brimscombe & Thrupp 3-2 at home, thanks to Tommy Castle’s late winner.

Ashley Cardwell put the visitors in front with a superb shot past Matt Hyslop in the Kidlington goal, only for Jack Quainton to equalise with a left-foot shot from 20 yards.

But a defensive lapse allowed Cardwell to restore Brinscombe’s lead with his second goal.

Kidlington levelled on 46 minutes when a cross from Lewis Brownhill was headed in by Danny Bone.

The hosts got the winner a minute from time when Castle rifled in another Brownhill cross from close range.

Abingdon United lost 3-0 at Flackwell Heath, all the goals coming in the second half from Gavin James, Jamie West and Stuart Glynn.
