RUGBY UNION: Grove back in business

6:00am Tuesday 18th February 2014

Grove got back to winning ways in South West 1 East with a 23-14 victory on Maidenhead’s artificial pitch, but it was a far from faultless display.

In particular, their line-out and scrummaging need attention.

Grove started in lively fashion, but it was the home side who went ahead with a penalty Almost immediately, Grove were awarded a penalty which Harry Carr landed with a great kick.

Grove hooker Steve Dixey was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

Maidenhead regainedd the lead with another penalty, but once again Carr restored parity with his second penalty to make it 6-6 at half-time.

Ben Law, Dave Johnson and Joe Bellinger put in some strong runs and as Grove kept the pressure.

Carr put them ahead with a penalty, only for Maidenhead to hit back with a try in the corner.

A try from Joe Chivers, converted by Carr, put Grove 16-11 clear before Maidenhead cut the deficit with a penalty.

The best move of the day saw Grove go further ahead, Guy Nicholl coming into the line at an acute angle to take the ball and go over unopposed.

Carr’s conversion increased the advantage to 23-14.

Maidenhead forced their way back to the Grove 22 where they were awarded a kickable penalty in front of the posts which would have given them a bonus point.

Instead, they went for the line-out in the corner which they won, but they could not break through Grove’s defences.
