Former Oxford United striker David Rush has applied to join the club's coaching staff.

The 42-year-old was a coach at Gateshead last year and was briefly served as caretaker manager before Gary Mills took over last September.

He is now keen to help out former teammate Mickey Lewis, who has been appointed as caretaker manager after Chris Wilder's resignation on Sunday.

Rush said: "I spoke to Mickey on Monday morning and he told me what the situation was.

"My CV has gone into the club and has been passed to the chairman, Ian Lenagan, applying for a coaching role.

"I think I can bring a lot to Oxford and it's a club that's always been close to my heart."

Rush made 107 appearances, scoring 24 times, in two and a half years for the U's, after joining from Sunderland for £100,000 in 1994.
