Oxford Mail: Chris Wilder gets his point across at Wycombe Chris Wilder gets his point across at Wycombe

CHRIS Wilder believes Oxford United are getting closer to top form after their five-game winless run ended with a 1-0 victory at Wycombe Wanderers.

Nicky Wroe’s crisp half-volley won the game late on to breach the stubborn Chairboys, who had Steven Craig sent off inside the opening 20 minutes.

It was the moment of magic Wilder bemoaned the U’s were lacking in their goalless draw at home to Portsmouth a week earlier.

Coming after an encouraging 2-2 draw at Championship side Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup last Tuesday, the United boss felt the Wycombe victory was another step towards recapturing their pre-Christmas form.

He said: “I thought all the players were getting back to where we were with the Dagenham and Morecambe games.

“We have had a blip over Christmas, but I saw signs against Portsmouth, where every part of the game apart from the final third was good.

“I definitely saw signs at Charlton and at Wycombe we stressed to the players it was important they played well, but that you get the right result. And they did that.”

The winning goal was a moment of real quality from Wroe, who is on loan from Preston North End until the end of the season.

With the exception of a short-term deal for Jonathan Henly to cover goalkeeping injuries, Wroe is the only signing United have made in January.

Wilder has not given up hope of making the additions he thinks are needed before the end of the month.

He said: “I’ll be trying to work on stuff in terms of getting players in.

“I still think we’re a bit light and I’ve expressed my opinions to the chairman.

“Hopefully we can sit down and address that.”

Dave Kitson missed the game with an ankle injury which emerged on the way home from Charlton.

He has had a scan, but at this stage it is not known how long the forward will be on the sidelines.

Hmmmm, struggling to beat a poor Wycombe side who were reduced to 10 men?

Wake up Wilder. Half the rouble is you live in a dream world where we are a decent team playing decent football. The reality is, we are average at best and we play hoof ball, rarely creating anything!

Agree with all of the above posters. Although I am one who believes we need new strikers I also think we aren't creative enough, too many long balls, hit and hope rather than proper pass and move football although when we do play pass and move we look good, we really do! We have some of the best players we have had for many a long year and are capable of decent football and should build on this, by that I mean bring in a decent goal poacher and someone who can put in a better final ball into the danger area. I think Kitsons attitude must be questioned as he is now out injured following his ban over the new year period, he really doesn't like playing at this time of year and according to a Reading fan I know never has done. Smalley again showed he is no goal scorer and Beano showed he has re-found his movement off the ball which is good but still has to re-find his goal scoring instinct. Fortunately we have midfielders and defenders who can contribute with goals but we will continue to struggle unless we find a goal scorer quickly. 10 days left in January and still time to find one Mr. Lenagan. We have to dip onto the market if Promotion is to be achieved. Final point, the 6 bookings were stupid, Wroe was obviously delighted to score but both him and Constable need a good talking to over getting booked for over celebrating.

More chance of winning Miss World than a new, non-loan, signing.
