Burnell happy with London Welsh victory

JUSTIN Burnell was happy enough with London Welsh’s 26-23 victory over a stubborn Pontypridd.

The Exiles’ head coach felt referee Lloyd Linton had been too lenient on the visitors’ efforts to “disrupt” his side, but was pleased at a win, which maintained their hopes of reaching the British & Irish Cup’s knockout stages.

“I just thought it was a totally inconsistent game,” said Burnell.

“We always knew Ponty were going to come with so much endeavour and spirit and they were allowed to disrupt, weren’t they?

“But it was a win and I am happy with that.”

Fly half Will Robinson, who kicked six out of six efforts and goal, was named man-of-the-match after a very assured display.

Burnell said: “He’s coming good isn’t he?

“He is a good young prospect and a very worthy man-of-the-match.

“I was very pleased for him. It was a very difficult game to manage and they were allowed to turn it into a dogfight.”

Welsh must now beat London Scottish, to whom they have already lost twice this season, if they are to progress, but Burnell is not getting too carried away with the idea of revenge.

“Of course it is a motivation, but it is not about that,” he said.
