FOOTBALL: Whitehead's winner ends Didcot's Saturday jinx
8:00am Monday 30th December 2013 in Sport
Ben Whitehead’s dramatic injury-time winner made it a landmark day for Didcot.
Th 3-2 victory at Cinderford Town came just two days after their narrow success over local rivals North Leigh on Boxing Day.
Incredibly, it was the Railwaymen’s first Calor League Division 1 South & West victory on a Saturday since February and their first back-to-back wins of the campaign.
It looked like being another pointless afternoon on the road for Didcot as Cinderford took a fourth-minute lead, George Lloyd netting from close range.
Gradually, however, the visitors started to get a grip on things, striker Germaine Ofori causing the problems.
After 18 minutes Ofori, on-loan from Reading FC’s academy, was brought down when clean through by Andy Lewis who was duly red-carded.
With the man advantage, Didcot were now on-top and they levelledbefore the break. A pinpoint pass from Josh Dutton-Black found Ofori, who made no mistake.
A minute later, the visitors were gifted a penalty for handball. But Cinderford keeper Alex Harris saved John Mills’s spot-kick.
Didcot took the lead four minutes into the second half when Ofori, on the left, curled the ball into the far corner of the goal.
Cinderford levelled 15 minutes from time with a great strike from Neal Evans.
Just when it looked like honours would end even Didcot grabbed a stoppage time winner, Sam Elkins crossing into the box for Whitehead to thump a header past Harris.
Didcot Tn: Williams, Elkins, J Parrish, McKirnan, Carnell, S Parrish, Dutton-Black, Longford (Baines 70), Ofori, Mills, Whitehead. Subs not used: Thorne, MacDonald.
