Mick Marriott made the most of a hot peg to win Benson AC’s Christmas Match by the proverbial mile.

Fishing the Thames at Warborough, he caught 14 bream to 7lb on maggot feeder for a superb weight of 83lb.

Just 2lb 1oz was enough to give Steve Wildman second place, while Lol Budd was third with 1.0.0.

All eight anglers went home with a festive prize.

Alan Hewer took the honours in the Sutton Courtenay AC Christmas Charity Match on the Otneys stretch of the Thames with one fish – a cracking chub of 6.5.0.

It fell to maggot feeder and enabled him to finish clear of Ian Higgins, who had a mixed bag of chub and perch for 5.4.0, and Gary Stafford with a 3.7.0 chub.

Five of the 12 anglers did not weigh in.

The club’s next match is the Dawson Memorial Cup on the Otneys on January 5.

There was a good turnout of 21 for Littlemore AS’s Christmas Shield on the Thames at Sandford Meadows, but someone forgot to invite the fish!

Chub were the target and Dick Martin caught three of them on a straight lead with worm for a winning 9.10.0.

Vernon Adams caught two late chub on maggot feeder for 8.12.0 and second, followed by Steve Pope with four small chub on maggot feeder for 5.6.0.

Tackley Estates swapped their usual canal venue for Fritwell, where ten anglers fished their Golden Man Trophy.

Top spot went to Anthony Alder with 46.12.0 of carp to pole and maggot, followed by Stephen Malone with 38.8.0 of carp on the same tactics.

Mick Dempsey used waggler and maggot to catch 19.8.0 of carp for third place.

Clanfield AC fished their Christmas Match on the Oxford Canal, attracting 21 anglers, who had mixed bags dominated by perch.

Giles Woolliams (Clanfield) fished red maggot over chopped worm on the pole for top spot with 10.6.8, well clear of Dave Pether (Kidlington) with 5.15.0 and Paul Jackman with 4.0.0.

Charlbury AC are holding an open match on the Evenlode on December 29. Draw is at Charlbury Station at 8am, fishing 9-2. £15 all in.
