OXFORDSHIRE’S Alex Cook has been selected for England’s team for the Under 15 European Championships in Basel, Switzerland, next year.

The 14-year-old, from Chinnor, flies out on February 13 for the tournament in which he will play in the singles.

He earned his selection following a series of impressive performances over the last three months.

They included recording one of the best results by an Oxfordshire junior in recent years when he won three medals at the Cheltenham Under 15 Gold Star tournament.

Cook achieved a medal in each discipline, taking gold in the mixed doubles with Surrey’s Samodani Wietunge, silver in the singles and bronze in the boys’ doubles with Sussex’s Zach Russ.

Wietunge and Russ are also included in the England side of four boys and four girls.

Cook, who attends Lord Williams’s School, Thame, has taken part in international competitions previously in Denmark and Germany, but this will be the first time he has been part of the England team.
