Dave Kitson will be available for Oxford United at York City on Saturday after the Football Association confirmed the forward was not due to serve a suspension.

The 33-year-old, who hinted yesterday in the Sun that this season could be his last, picked up a booking shortly before scoring the stoppage-time winner in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.

After the game he, like many, believed it was his tenth of the season, which incurs a two-game ban.

But yesterday, the U’s received clarification from the FA that Kitson was only on nine yellow cards for the season.

The confusion arose from his sending-off against Exeter.

It was for two bookable offences, but under the regulations, the punishment came in the form of a one-match ban and does not count towards the tally.

The reprieve is only likely to postpone the suspension.

To escape a ban, Kitson would have to avoid the referee’s notebook until the cut-off period in mid-April.
