GOLF: Mason knocks out Frilford in dramatic tie
8:20am Tuesday 22nd October 2013 in Sport
SUDDEN death was needed to decide the Knock-out Cup semi-final as Tadmarton Heath clinched a tense 2-1 victory against Frilford Heath.
Tim Smith and Lee White gave Frilford a 4 & 2 win in the first match of the tie, played at Drayton Park.
A 2 & 1 success for Tadmarton’s James Burton and Spencer Hallam in the third match meant the outcome hinged on the second group.
All square after 18 holes, it went to a fourth extra hole, where Andrew Mason holed a 20-foot putt for the narrowest of victories with partner Luke Washborne over Toby Morgan and Matt Chiddington.
Tadmarton will now face Chiltern Forest in the final at the renamed Cotswold Club, formerly Chipping Norton, on Saturday, November 2.
Meanwhile, all four league titles are still up for grabs going into the final round of fixtures this weekend.
Burford need one and a half points to claim the Section 1 crown, while at the other end of the table Cotswolds Club require a big win against Frilford Heath to avoid relegation alongside Oxford City.
Drayton Park preserved their Section 2 status with a 3-0 win against Buckingham, who were relegated with Witney Lakes as a result.
At the top, Studley Wood are in pole position to book a place in the top flight, but could still be pipped by Ellesborough, 3-0 winners against Witney Lakes last weekend, and Saturday’s opponents Feldon Valley.
Magnolia Park have played all their Section 3 fixtures and if the leaders are to take the one promotion spot, they need Chiltern Forest to slip up against relegated Bicester.
The other fixture is effectively a relegation play-off between Hadden Hill and Shrivenham Park.
North Oxford are on the brink of the Section 4 title, with only a 3-0 defeat to rivals Rye Hill this weekend denying them promotion.
All promotion and relegation issues are subject to possible league restructuring.
