MOTORSPORT: Williams were below par, says Maldonado
11:00am Saturday 5th October 2013 in Sport
Pastor Maldonado admitted Williams had performed poorly in final practice for tomorrow’s race.
Maldonado and teammate Valtteri Bottas finished 17th and 18th respectively at the Korea International Circuit in Yeongam, continuing a disappointing season for the Grove-based outfit.
The pair clocked fastest laps of 1min 41.117secs and 1.41.289, with Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) topping the rankings on 1.38.673.
Maldonado, who has won Williams’ only point of the season so far, said: “Our performance wasn’t up to the level we hoped for today, but hopefully we can analyse the data tonight and improve for tomorrow.
“We seem to have made a step forward with the new front wing, but we need to work on the car as a whole to look at all areas.
“As always we will do our best and try to get the maximum out of the car.
Bottas added: “We did quite a few tests with the car today, both mechanical and aerodynamic.
“We still have quite a bit of work to do with the car balance as we are struggling with the front end, particularly in the mid-corner.
“We need to work on that, but the positive thing is that we seem to have made a step forward with the new front wing we tested on Pastor’s car, so I look forward to trying that myself.”
Driving for the Leafield-based Caterham team, Giedo van der Garde was 19th in 1.42.161 and Charles Pic 20th in 1.42.798.
The last two spots were occupied by drivers from Banbury’s Marussia outfit.
Jules Bianchi was 21st in 1.43.08 , while Max Chilton was 22nd and last in 1.43.441.
