FOOTBALL: Simpson's double lifts Banbury to sixth
10:00am Monday 23rd September 2013 in Sport
Leon Simpson was the star as Banbury secured their third Calor League Premier Division win in a row on Saturday to move up to sixth spot.
The 6ft 8in stri ker scored a brace as Edwin Stein’s side edged Hitchin Town 2-1 in a fiercely-contested match, in which both teams finished with ten men.
After a quiet half-an hour, in which Hitchin went closest when the lively Robbie Burns brought a decent save from Banbury keeper Leigh Bedwell, the hosts took the lead.
A cross from the left by Marvin Martin to the far post saw the incoming Simpson dive full length to head home past Tahj Bell in the Hitchin goal.
The Canaries responded seven minutes later when a 20-yard strike from Burns found the right hand corner of the net. The winning goal came in the 52nd minute when Simpson took advantage of some defensive hesitancy to knock the ball home from 12 yards .
Two minutes later Kynan Isaac was denied by Bell. At the other end, Bedwell brought off a point-blank save to deny Jamal Lowe.
In the 77th minute, the Puritans were reduced to ten men when Scott Bridges was shown the red card for swinging a punch at a Hitchin player.
Ten-man Banbury defended well before the numbers were evened up in the 88th minute when Hitchin’s Lewis Rolfe was sent off for a second yellow card.
Banbury Utd: Bedwell, Cray, Abrahams, Scott Bridges, Blossom, Mbamarah, Fraser-Allen, Martin, Simpson, Isaac, McNulty (Pinto 52). Subs not used: Morgan, Menezes, Dumbleton, Westwood.
