ANGLING: Gunsmiths are kings of the Thames
11:00am Saturday 21st September 2013 in Sport
Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths are celebrating after landing the prestigious Thames Team Championship for the first time.
Led by Carl Eland, who came third in the individual event, Gunsmiths finished three points clear in the competition, which was contested by 18 teams of six on the Thames from Lechlade through to Tadpole Bridge.
Eland was supported by teammates Mick Denton, John Beesley, Tony Hobbs, Tom Hobbs and Geoff Lewendon as Gunsmiths finished on 74 points, with Diddys Bait-Tech second on 71.
The fish wanted to feed but the very strong winds, mainly downstream kept the weights down.
The individual winner was Gerry Blunt (Browning Andover) with 21.2.0, while Eland had two chub in his tally of 12.0.0.
Individual: 1 G Blunt (Browning And-over) 21.2.0, 2 A McTiffin (Devizes MG) 15.4.0, 3 C Eland (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) 12.0.0, 4 J Swan (Radcot) 11.13.0.
Teams: 1 Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths 74pts, 2 Diddys Bait-Tech 71, 3 Turners Black 69.
Pete Clarke made it four wins on the spin when he took the Littlemore AS Secretary’s Cup on the Thames at Sandford.
Clarke had a good net of roach on waggler with hemp and tares for a winning weight of 13.0.0 on a day when the 15 anglers produced a total of 79.8.0.
Mark Shepherd was second with 10.13.0, while Brian Hutchings finished third with 9.9.0.
Dave Scott-Picton found his drawn peg to be unfishable. He was allowed to move to a spare peg and made the most of it to secure first place in North Oxford AS’s Frewin Cup on the Thames at Godstow.
Ten anglers braved the rough conditions, with Scott-Picton's roach and perch for 5.1.0 enough to carry the day.
Jason Bean was runner-up with 4.0.0. Henry Clarke and Jamie Barrett were joint third with 3.6.0.
Bob Alder came out on top in Beehive AC’s Larman Shield at a wet and windy Panshill Wood Lake.
Despite the conditions, Alder collected an impressive 106.2.0 carp to pole and maggot.
He finished ahead of Kevin Jeacock, whose runner-up weight of 92.8.0 earned him the UEFA Cup. Barry Radford was third with 87.0.0.
Stephen Malone’s 2.6.8 was enough to win Tackley Sports AC’s Northbrook River Cherwell Roach Cup, contested by ten anglers.
Anthony Alder was second with 2.1.0, while Monty Finnemore jnr (Predator) came third with 1.2.0.
