10:00am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Sport
Outstanding displays by Deta Hedman, Casey Gallagher an Sean Holley could not prevent Oxfordshire suffering a heavy 23-13 defeat by Kent in their opening BDO Inter-Counties Premier Division match of the season at Tonbridge.
Hedman produced the highest average of the weekend to help the women’s A team to victory with assistance from Gallagher – but that proved to be the visitors only success. In the opening contest, Oxon Ladies B went down 4-2.
Their lady of the match, Julie Newman levelled at 1-1, but Oxon lost the next two due to missed doubles before Cath Birch gained their second point.
In the men’s B clash, it looked a lot more promising with wins from Jon Newland man-of-the-match Dean Lockyer and Stuart Robinson, but Kent took the next nine games to establish a commanding 13-5 lead at the end of the first day.
On Sunday, Kent took a 2-0 advantage in the ladies’ A match before Clare Bywaters won her game for Oxon.
This was followed by a great debut from talented teenager debutant Gallagher, who che-cked out on 164 to win her game.
Rebecca Rose took the next followed by Hedman with a 30.06 average – the highest in the division as the visitors won 4-2.
Trailing 15-9, Oxon needed a strrong display from their men’s A line-up.
Victories from Keith Bedding and Josh McCarthy levelled things up after four ties.
Kent won the next four before Eamonn Lilly gained another point.
This was followed by another win by Kent before Oxon’s man-of-the match Holley, with an average of 29.78 and four maximums on his return to the county, gained their final point of the day.
